THE CHICAGOLAND FAMILY
American Eskimo Dogs are neither American nor Eskimo. They were bred in Germany and were known as a German Spitz until World War II when the name was changed in this country, to this country, and for their Nordic looks.
The American Eskimo Dog is bred in three sizes: Toy, Miniature and Standard.
Toy: 9 inches to and including 12 inches to the withers.
Miniature: Over 12 inches to and including 15 inches to the withers.
Standard: Over 15 inches and including 19 inches to the withers.
Their weights are from 10 pounds to roughly 40 pounds.
Eskies are high energy; happy dogs who are very people-oriented and crave constant attention. They are not a breed for everyone. Without proper socialization and training, Eskies can develop behavior problems. They can become protective of their family and surroundings. They need an “Alpha” owner who is willing to be a strong leader. They are a challenging but delightful breed with the above recommendations. With positive reinforcement, training and attention American Eskimo Dogs learn quickly and are eager to please. They are very loving and can sense when their humans need to be cheered up or be loved.
The American Eskimo Dog’s coat is a double coat consisting of a dense undercoat and a longer coat of guard fur growing through it to form the outer coat. This coat naturally repels dirt and odor. Eskies generally shed twice a year with the change of seasons in the Spring and Fall. There is also some year around shedding. Regular brushing helps prevent mattes.
American Eskimo Dogs are typically healthy dogs with a lifespan of 13 to 16 years.
